Week #8: 1969 Baltimore Orioles @ 1910 Philadelphia Athletics
Both teams come to the bracket finale with 5-2 records. The game certainly has playoff implications. We will see which team prevails. The Athletics build a slim 6-4 lead heading into the top of the 9th inning. The Athletics manager is quietly confident that his AXZ Chief Bender can hold on to the lead. Motton starts the inning with a F6. But Boog Powell cuts the lead in half with a long solo blast. Rettenmund follows by drawing a walk….and the slow footed Brooks Robinson legs out an infield hit to put runners at 1st and 2nd with only one out…Bender bears down and gets Davey Johnson to get a F8….bringing the usually light hitting Mark Belanger to the plate. He rolls a 42-14….Bender just missing the plate to make it 2-0….and Belanger sends one into the gap with a 66-0….and it falls for a 2B hit….64-6….but the slow moving Robinson is gunned down at the plate by CF Rube Oldring…making this a tie game heading into the bottom half of the 9th. The Athletics get a base runner but do no damage and the Orioles will start the 10th with their #9 hitter C Elrod Hendricks…who promptly rolls a 66-1….to give the Orioles their first and only lead of the game….and the As have no magic left in their dice and go quietly in the bottom of the 10th against the ACX Eddie Watt. The Orioles make the improbable comeback against the Athletics and are headed to the playoffs…..leaving the Athletics and their manager wondering what might have been as Patrick Cox sweeps the playoffs and brings the title home for the 1969 Orioles:)!

Congrats! to Patrick for a splendid and exciting end to bracket play and leading the Orioles to the title….a fine APBA manager and a gentleman to boot!!!
